Quick summary and highlights:
The Yardworks grass trimmer arrived in a striking and informative box. Unboxing the trimmer was easy due to the cleverly placed and designed holders. The battery and charger were separated in their own boxes. The trimmer shield guard, edge guide, handle and manual were packaged in a transparent plastic bag.
Assembly of the trimmer was completed easily and took about 5 minutes. Battery was 50% charged out of the box and fully charged within an hour. Battery and charger is well constructed with good ventilation and solid connections. Both battery and charger have clear indicators of battery level and charging progress. Battery placement is out of the way and will not produce any heat on your arm.
Using the Yardworks grass trimmer wheel helps keep a constant distance from the edge while maintaining a smooth movement. The edge guide helps with trimming the grass to a consistent length as well. You can adjust the angle of the handle to fit the type of trimming.
PROS:
- Power
- Battery capacity (with charge level indicator)
- Compact storage
- Wheel and edge guide for trimming
- Quality
CONS:
- Awkward angle between the battery connection (arm rest) and the handle
Detailed Review:
1. Unboxing
The Yardworks 40V Li-ion grass trimmer was delivered and it was apparent that Yardworks is making a statement with the striking yellow and carbon fibre look box. The box contains most relevant information about the product and has a good layout.
Unboxing the product was easy and effortless as everything is well placed and easily removable. The battery and charger were separated in their own boxes; the trimmer shield guard, edge guide, handle and manual were packaged in a transparent plastic bag.

2. Assembly
The assembly is a quick process and in terms of DIY skill required I would rate it as a 1 out of 10. You only need to unscrew three screws, place the edge guide, place the guard by using the orientation notches, align the screw holes and fasten the three screws.
Next up is the auxiliary handle. You remove the auxiliary handle knob place the handle on the designated area and fasten the knob.
There is a cutting blade with 2 depth settings and also ship with tape around to avoid those unexpected cuts. The head can pivot to change from an edge to a trimming function and reversible. The head can also tilt with three settings by a pushing the edge button and changing the angle until an audible click can be heard.
Final assembly step is to connect the upper and lower shaft assemblies together by using the guides and the + power sign.
The battery is shipped with about 50% charge and it took about one hour to fully charge. The battery is a 40V Lithium Ion 2Ah Yardworks battery. The construction and material of the battery is good quality with a thin rubber strip around the edge for added protection. There is also sufficient ventilation on the battery for heat dissipation during use and charge.
The charger is of good quality design with sufficient ventilation and good solid connection terminals for the battery to slide in.
4. Usage
Using the trimmer was a good experience as it feels well balanced, medium weight and will not leave you grasping for air. First press the lock-out button and pull the trigger. The trigger is “pull” sensitive so you can run the trimmer at a lower speed continuously. The trimmer runs relatively quiet during operation and is a nice feature to help the neighbours catching up on some z’s early in the morning.
The automatic line advancement is a great help with replacing the warn line and reduce the need to turn the trimmer upside down to extend the line.
I could walk along all my edges and trim the grass close to the wall with about 50% battery charge level left. There was no place where it sounded like it could not handle the amount of grass but during fall there are no masses of grass around to do a bog down test.
Cleaning was easy as most places are reachable and can be wiped with a rag or gloves.
5. Conclusion
One thing that I found different and somewhat uncomfortable (at certain angles) was the control unit at the top of the shaft where the handle and trigger is located and fixed with the shaft. At certain angles it was somewhat uncomfortable to use as the angle it was at and the angle I needed to cut opposed each other and I would have to twist my wrist to work on safety and the trigger. It could be related to my size or how I used my previous trimmer and just need to get used to how this one works and find the sweet spot.
The Yardworks 40V Li-Ion 2Ah Cordless Grass Trimmer is a good grass trimmer. It does what it should and has a bunch of pros.
